Icon Workshop * St. Francis

St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in Harford, WI held a fun and informative workshop, by Iconographer, Alice Pollock. What can normally take months to "write", we did in a 7+ hour workshop, that gave us an introduction to creating our own icon. Looking forward to doing this again soon!  In fact, Christ Episcopal in Delavan will be doing another Icon of Christ in November 2019.
Here are some of the steps in doing the St. Francis icon.  I am not at all a painter, so this was learning new things for me, but I enjoyed the aspects of quiet and reflection as we did each step along the way.

Alleluia! He is Risen! Art in the Narthex

Art in the Narthex at Christ Episcopal, Delavan, featured an empty tomb for Easter Sunday morning, and the following week or so. 

From John 20:1-9  "Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.  So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.  Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.  He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.  Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,  as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.  Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.  (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

I did the altar decorations for Palm Sunday at Christ Episcopal, as well as some Art in the Narthex assemblage installations.

2019 Art as Prayer Show * Art For God's Sake

Our yearly Art as Prayer Show at Christ Episcopal, Delavan, WI was held March 20 -24th.  Over 75 artists, of all ages, displayed 150+ works of art, in varied mediums, along with scriptural or prayer references to reflect on each piece.   More photos can be seen on my facebook post at this link

Assemblage Collaboration with Sunday School kids....

This was a fun project that we did for an upcoming Art As Prayer Show at Christ Episcopal Church, Delavan, WI.  I found the barn boards at a local place, already stained various colors.  Then cut them to different lengths, using the cut off piece for the heads.  Drilled some holes for the eyes and mouth.  Some of our Sunday School kids stayed after Church for a few weeks to help with this.  The kids decorated the heads of the people, and the hearts.  I attached them all together, added drift wood arms, and when we displayed them, we had them on blocks of wood, and slid some wooden shoe stretchers underneath to make it seem like they were wearing shoes.

Goose Gal and Hatchlings

This is a fun assemblage, body part swap... used a neck and head of a goose, that was on a basket, and the body of a doll.  I merged them using black and white tissue paper, mod podged onto the body and neck.  Added some features to make the feet look webbed, added feathers, and she was transformed!

I also took some plastic Easter Eggs, and cut a mouth into them, modpodged with red tissue paper inside, and black and white on the outside.  I added teeth, legs, and feathers, and the hatchlings were born... well, partially born. Heh!

I made a nest out of some sticks and a recycled placemat, on a turntable for them to live on.

This may become part of my "cabinet of curiousities" I am slowly working on.

Reuniting my Aunt with her childhood teddybear

This is my Aunt, as a child, with her teddy bear.  My Grandmother, her mother, had saved it, and kept it in the room that was my Aunt's for years and years after she had married and moved from town.

When my Grandmother died, my Aunt didn't want the extra things, but my Mom kept it along with other remembrances.

When my Mom died, we split up family things, and I took the teddy bear.  Going through bins of old family photos, I found this one.  Since I had the bear, I decided to put it into a shadow box type of assemblage along with the photo, and added a ladybug, which are favorite's of my Aunt's too.  I gifted to her on her 92nd birthday.

She loved it, and when I was hanging it in her bedroom, she noticed that the chair in the photo she is sitting on, was the same childhood chair she had in her bedroom now too!  It was fun giving her back this childhood treasure!
