Shelter in Faith
"SHELTER IN FAITH"
The Book of Psalms are said to be the heart cries of God’s people.
In these times of the COVID-19 pandemic, and sheltering in place, it seems the whole world is crying out.
God doesn’t say we won’t have times of trial and tribulation, but God DOES promise to be there with us in those times.
These are portions of some of the psalms that this assemblage is based on, and that have given me comfort in the midst of the storms of life, and in this time.
Psalm 46:1-7
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Psalm 91:1-4
“You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”
Psalm 121
“I lift up my eyes to the hills - from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.”

Titled "3:16"
This assemblage is titled "3:16".
The box in this once was a gift box of sausage and cheese, it now has pages from old, re- purposed, Prayer Books, Hymnals and Bibles collaged on the inside, many of them prayers for the whole world during this trying time.
The tin heart was painted red, and 3 rusted spikes were added to it, symbolic of the nails that were used in crucifying Jesus. The crown that comes out the top of the box signifies Jesus as King of kings, and Prince of peace.
The blue and green heart at the base depicts the world, with the continents featured in green.
On the outside of the box, on one side is a rusted cross, beneath are dominoes, the numbers 3 - 1 - 6 signify the chapter and verse from John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
On the other side is a 3-D’d lithograph rendition of “The Virgin in Prayer”, by artist Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato.

Bringing Awareness of MMIW (Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women)
At the end of January, I attended an opening for an Art Exhibit at UW Whitewater's Crossman Gallery, called, "Stolen Sisters". The art featured was meant to bring awareness of MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women).
Thousands upon thousands women and girls have gone missing for years, some found murdered, some still not found after years and years of searching.
Law enforcement, journalists, and activists in Indigenous communities - in both the US and Canada - have fought to bring awareness to this connection between sex trafficking, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and the women who go missing and turn up murdered.
Indigenous women and girls are being taken in an alarming way. Native American women are murdered at a rate 10 times higher than other ethnicities and it's the third leading cause of death for them (Centers for Disease Control). The majority of these murders are committed by non-Native people on Native-owned land. Because of the lack of communication between state, local, and tribal law enforcement, it's difficult to begin the investigation process. Many times when Indigenous women and girls go missing, or when Indigenous murder victims are unidentified, forensic evidence has not been accurately collected or preserved by local law enforcement. Cases have been allowed to quickly go "cold", and crucial evidence has been "lost", or never forwarded on from local law enforcement to the appropriate agencies.
According to the National Crime Information Center, 5,712 American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls were reported missing in 2016 alone, but only 116 of those cases were logged with the Department of Justice. Violence against Native American women is much less likely to be reported or prosecuted than violence against non-Native women.
My Shadow Box assemblage installation is also meant to bring awareness of what is an almost invisible epidemic, and hopefully helping to make Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls visible!

Making Crowns for my Santos Angel
I used some small lampshades, turned upside down to make a couple of crowns for my Santos Angel (see previous post of the renovations on the angel) I found a decorative wire bowl, and cut it apart, along with jewelry parts and odds and ends... I love how they turned out!
I like the crown with the turquoise colored stone in it best for this Santos Angel. I'll have to find another one for the other crown!
And the reason I made crowns for my Santos Angel is also found in the Book of Revelation 4:9-11, "And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing,
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
